  1. Hearts of Iron IV looks tempting but honestly kind of intimidating. The review calls it deep and rewarding, but how long did it take users to feel comfortable running a whole front?
Are there condensed tutorial mods or beginner campaigns that make WW2 strategy doable for casual players? I don’t want to spend 50 hours just to get the hang of production queues haha.

    • Start as Italy or Germany if you want to learn fast, but they can be overwhelming. Portugal or Hungary are chill starter countries. Also, keep production templates simple: more infantry, fewer templates to manage.

    • HoI4’s complexity is real. Try the ‘Road to War’ scenario or smaller countries (like Romania) to learn production and army templates slowly. The ‘Expert AI’ and ‘Toolbox’ mods can help and there are good tutorial series by MarcoStyle and Quill18.

  2. XCOM 2 is my go-to when I want tense tabletop-style missions. The reviewer nailed it — those emergent mission moments are why I keep replaying.
Modding breathes even more life into it: Long War 2, Anarchy’s Children, and FIRAXIS fixes make each campaign feel fresh.
    Couple things I noticed:
    – Rookie mistakes can snowball fast, so save scum until you understand the enemy types
    – DLCs add cool content but the mod community fills most gaps
Any mod recs or late-game strategies people swear by?

    • Totally agree — Long War 2 is the big overhaul if you want a grueling experience. If you prefer quality-of-life mods, look into ‘XCOM 2 Community High Resolution’ and ‘Better Advent’ for AI tweaks.

    • One more tip: suppress/disable some aggressive enemy mods on your first Long War playthrough; the learning curve is steep.

    • If you’re going for tactics: prioritize cover and overwatch bait setups. For mods, Jaeger’s expansion mods plus Long War take it to another level. Also ‘Character Pool’ is a must for roleplay.

    • For late game: always keep a ‘shadow’ squad rested with grenades and medkits. When enemies spawn with sectopods, that extra firepower saves campaigns.

    • I like the ‘Save Scum’ explanation 😂 but seriously, try psi-commanders early and build a modular sniper + grenadier duo — they’ve carried me through late-game missions.

  3. Nice list! Quick question — for Age of Empires IV (Anniversary Edition), is the Anniversary content worth buying if you already have the base game? Also, srsly, does it have crossplay/matchmaking with people on Xbox or is it PC-only?

    • I upgraded for the new civs and maps and didn’t regret it. Multiplayer is mostly PC; I played a few friend matches with someone on Game Pass PC but not on console Xbox players.

    • Good question. The Anniversary Edition adds civs, maps, and QoL updates — worth it if you want more variety. AoE IV’s multiplayer is focused on PC (Steam/Xbox account integration) — crossplay with Xbox consoles is limited because the game is primarily PC-focused for ranked matches.
